RICHARD H. SUBERS- Obituary
Richard H. Subers, 72, of Clayton, New Jersey, passed away on July 29, 2026, surrounded by his family after a hard-fought battle with cancer.
Rich was born to the late Walter and Charlotte Subers (nee Leaf) on November 12, 1953, in Camden, New Jersey. He lived in Westville for most of his younger years. As a teenager, his family moved to the Philippines, where his father served as a top civilian engineer for the U.S. Navy. Rich loved sharing stories of his many adventures overseas.
After returning to New Jersey, he graduated from Clayton High School in 1972. In that year, he met a waitress named Eileen (nee Linsinbigler) while hanging out at the Clayton Diner. She became the love of his life, and they married in May 1974. They settled in Clayton and have lived in the same home since 1980.
Rich began his career with the Clayton Road Department at the age of 21. He later joined the Mantua Township Municipal Utilities Authority as Executive Director and was subsequently appointed Administrator for Mantua Township. Rich retired in 2009 after 35 years of dedicated service to local government.
A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Rich’s family was his greatest pride and joy. He loved celebrating their accomplishments and never missed a softball game, soccer match, dance recital, or band concert.
Rich dedicated countless hours to serving his community, beginning as a volunteer firefighter with the Clayton Fire Department. One of his greatest joys was coaching his daughters’ softball and soccer teams for many seasons. His commitment to youth sports led him to serve as President of the Clayton Soccer Association and Vice President of Softball for Clayton Little League. After his coaching days ended, he continued giving back as an umpire for Little League District 15. Rich made time for his own pursuits. A lifelong golfer, he became a member of Centerton Country Club after retiring. He also discovered a passion for woodworking, crafting custom pens for soldiers. A self-taught computer enthusiast, he was the family’s trusted tech support and, in recent years, enjoyed exploring 3D printing. He also rekindled his longtime interest in amateur radio, joining the Gloucester County Amateur Radio Club in Mullica Hill, where he formed many lasting friendships.
Rich never met a stranger. No matter where he went, he always seemed to run into someone he knew—even while on vacation. His favorite place was Ocean City, New Jersey, where he vacationed as a child and proudly continued the tradition with his own family for generations.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years, Eileen; daughters, Karen (Rob) Feudale and Valerie Subers; granddaughter, Felicia (Nicholas) Campbell; grandsons, Nicholas and Nate Feudale; great-granddaughter, Amelia Campbell; sister, Louise (Mike) Viola, and many family and friends.
Services will be held on Sunday, August 2nd from 10 AM to 12 PM at the BARCLAY FUNERAL HOME, 208 Maple Street, Clayton, NJ 08312 with a Celebration of Life beginning at 12 PM.
