LAWRENCE EDWARD ‘LARRY’ SCHOLZ – Obituary

Lawrence Edward “Larry” Scholz of Clayton on Sunday, November 11, 2018.  Age 92.  Predeceased by his wife of 42 years Mary Lois Scholz (nee Sullivan) and more recently Elayne B. Scholz-Shearer (nee Borer) as well as 3 grandchildren.  Survived by his children Patricia E. (Bob) Lany of Texas, Nancy A. (Charles) Bastow of Clayton, James E. (Randee) Scholz of Michigan, Jeffery C. (Laura) Scholz of Clayton, and step-daughter Pamela Favretto.  Also survived by 9 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild.  Son of the late John Adolph and Mary Anna (nee Pheifer) Scholz.
Born in Clayton where he lived all of his life, Larry proudly served in the Naval Air Corps during World War II and later as a reservist was called to serve his country again during the Korean War.  He worked as a millwright for E.I. DuPont in Deepwater for 32 years until his retirement in 1983.  Larry also worked as a Special Police Officer for the Boro of Clayton for 15 years and, after his retirement from DuPont, worked at Doughty’s Furniture Store in Clayton from 1984 until 2005.
Larry was recently the oldest living member of the Clayton Vol. Fire Company serving his community for over 60 years and holding various offices.  He was an exempt life member of the NJ State Firemen’s Relief Association and a member of the NJ State Fire Police.  Larry was a charter member of the Clayton Vol. Ambulance Corps, life member of the Clayton Lions Club, and member of the  Free & Accepted Masons, Glassboro Lodge #85 now Pitman Lodge #197.  He was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, trustee for the Cedar Green Cemetery, and longtime volunteer at Elmer Hospital.
Larry loved to keep busy and was always tinkering with something and who enjoyed scrapping metal for many years.  He was the go-to home handyman for many older widows in town who needed help around their homes.  In recent times, Larry could be found tackling several jig-saw puzzles a week.
Relatives and friends are invited to his viewing on Thursday, November 15, 2018, from 7:00 PM to 8:45 PM and again on Friday, November 16, 2018, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at the BARCLAY FUNERAL HOME, 208 Maple Street, Clayton, NJ 08312.  Masonic Service on Thursday at 8:45 PM and funeral service on Friday at 11:00 AM.  Interment Cedar Green Cemetery, Clayton.   In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Clayton Vol. Fire Co., 107 W.
