JOHN (JACK) LEROY SMITH – Obituary

World War II veteran John (Jack) Leroy Smith on Thursday, July 20, 2017. Age 89. Survived by sister Florinda Brewster of Hot Springs, AR.  Predeceased by mother, Josephine Smith (nee Brown) in 1970; step-father, Philip John Smith in 1987; brother William J. Smith Sr in 2016; and father John Neimeister in 1928.  Uncle to Susan E. Smith (Thomas Meteyer), Cynthia VandeGrift (Mark); William J. Smith, Jr. (Kathy), Michael A. Smith (Janet), Charles Brewster III, Arnold Brewster (deceased) and John Brewster (deceased).
Born John Leroy Neimeister in North Wildwood, NJ on February 6, 1928, John’s father John Neimeister died that same year on December 24.  His mother was later remarried to Phililp John Smith, who became Jack’s stepfather.  The family resided in National Park and Glassboro.  He graduated from Bishop Eustace High School and entered the Navy in 1945, earning the American Theater and Victory medals.  Jack returned to Glassboro, where he lived until 2009 when he moved to Friends Village in Woodstown.
Jack spent his career with Pitney Bowes Corporation as a regional technician, servicing office and postage machines.  He used these mechanical skills as well to pursue his hobbies which included flying his own airplane, servicing a variety of cars and trucks, and photography.  He was an active member of the Catholic Church and the American Legion.
