CONSTANCE MARIE COSTILL – Obituary

Constance Marie Costill (nee Werchan) of Mantua Township on Saturday, May 4, 2024.  Age 71.  Devoted wife of Douglas James Costill.  Loving mother of Matthew James Costill (Karen Murtha, wife) and Christina Marie Costill (John Berardi, fiancé).  Dear sister of Sharon Springer.  Daughter of the late Richard Gordon Werchan and Elizabeth Prentiss (nee Smart) Werchan.

As an adolescent, Connie was an avid horseback rider and member of the Vineland 4H Club.  She competed in equestrian competitions, one of her favorites being barrel racing. She would later become a teen leader for various clubs within the 4H, and she was named the 4H Member of The Year and went to Washington, DC as an ambassador representing the 4H organization.  Connie graduated from Vineland Senior High School in 1970.

While in college at age 21, Connie was crowned Dandelion Queen at the first Dandelion Festival held in Vineland. This led to her being featured on the TV game show “What’s My Line?” filmed at 30 Rockefeller Plaza in New York City, and the Larry Angel TV cooking show in Baltimore MD.

Connie graduated Summa Cum Laude from Temple University and started her career in Occupational Therapy at the Bacharach Institute of Rehabilitation near the Jersey Shore.  She worked for several different health care agencies in South Jersey over the years providing home health Occupational Therapy, with her longest stint with the South Jersey Visiting Nurse Association.  She also worked at Newcomb Hospital in Vineland NJ, Sacred Heart Hospital in Chester PA, and Pitman Manor in Pitman NJ.

In the spring of 1980, Connie met Douglas James Costill and they got married in 1983. They settled in Mantua Township where they have lived for the past 44 years and went on to have two children, Matthew James Costill and Christina Marie Costill.

Connie was an incredibly supportive mother, always involved with and encouraging the children’s education and extracurricular activities, and she instilled the positive Costill values in her children. The family vacationed every summer down at the Jersey shore. Then, she and Doug bought a boat, where they spent weekends at the shore, and eventually upgraded to a shore house, where they planned to retire.

Relatives and friends are invited to her visitation on Thursday, May 9, 2024, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the BARCLAY FUNERAL HOME, 208 Maple Street, Clayton, NJ 08312.  Services will be private at the convenience of the family.  Sign the guestbook at BarclayFuneralHome.net.
