Steve Sweeney Announces Candidacy for NJ Governor
‘I’m running for Governor because New Jersey is worth fighting for’ WOODBURY, NJ (December 11, 2023) – Former Senate President Steve Sweeney announced today that he will seek the Democratic nomination for Governor in 2025.“I’ll always put New Jersey’s kids, working families, and seniors first,” Sweeney pledged in a video release announcing his candidacy. “You know that’s who I’ll fight for because it’s who I’ve always fought for. It’s who I am. A fighter for people who can’t fight for themselves. I’m running for Governor because New Jersey is worth fighting for.”Sweeney, New Jersey’s longest-serving Senate President, emphasized the need to make New Jersey more affordable for all citizens. “If you want to, you should be able to work with dignity, buy a home, raise a family, care for loved ones and retire confidently – all in New Jersey,” he declared.He said he would fight for a “tax system that works for New Jersey families and retirees, not big corporations,” a first-class PreK-12 education system, expanded higher educational and job training opportunities, increased funding for local police, and a constitutional amendment to protect abortion rights.Sweeney, a union Ironworker, entered politics after his daughter, Lauren, was born with Down syndrome and has championed expending services for the developmentally disabled during his 13 years on the Gloucester County Board of Freeholders, including 12 as freeholder-director, to his 20 years in the Senate. |
