John was born in 1947 in Jersey City, NJ to Robert and Helma (nee Monroe) Kenney.  His father was in the military, so he was raised on various Air Force Bases including Westover AFB, Massachusetts, Ernest Harmon AFB, Newfoundland, and McGuire AFB, New Jersey.  John graduated from Rancocas Valley Regional High School in Mount Holly, NJ in 1966 and shortly thereafter followed in his father’s footsteps and joined the US Air Force.  He proudly served his country from May 1967 to May 1970 where he was an aircraft mechanic assigned to a C-130 and completed multiple missions during the Vietnam War. John was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palms, and a Presidential Unit Citation for his service to our country.

After marrying Janet Chant in 1972, they lived from Maine to Florida and eventually found themselves permanently residing in New Jersey where they have been a resident of Lake Gilman in Elk Township for the past 20 years.  John worked as a postal clerk with the United States Postal Service in Absecon until his retirement.  John was a dedicated outdoorsman who enjoyed golfing, fishing, birding, four-wheeling, and spending time with family and friends. His interests were numerous and varied.  John sang in the church choir, completed many crossword puzzles, enjoyed a variety of board and card games, and was a music and history buff.   He was a member of the New Jersey Audubon Society and served as president, and was also a lifetime member of the VFW where he served as the chaplain for Post 3702.
