TERRY MARIE DOWNS – Obituary

Terry Marie Downs (née Armstrong), age 80, on April 22, 2025, in Washington Township, NJ. She was the devoted wife of 62 years to the late Samuel Weldon Downs, whom she married in March 1962. Terry was the loving mother of Russell (Helen) Downs, Doug (Erin) Downs, Steve (Missy) Downs, and the late Sam (Michelle) Downs, Jr. She was a proud grandmother to Ashlee Downs, Zach (Daniela) Downs, Regina (Jim) Skinner, Trisha Downs, and Sam (Nicole) Downs, III. Her legacy continues through her cherished great-grandchildren: Rosie Skinner, Lucy Skinner, Kiya Downs, Jack Downs, Athena Downs, and Persephone Downs. Terry was the beloved daughter of the late Joseph Mathew and Barbara Ann “Bobbie” (née Hancock) Armstrong, and a dear sister to Linda (Jeff) Bevan, Joseph (Stephanie) Armstrong, and Judy Armstrong.

Terry spent her childhood and teenage years in Pitman, NJ, graduating from Pitman High School in 1963. She often shared fond memories of growing up in Pitman and remained deeply connected to the community throughout her life.

After marrying her beloved husband, Sam, the couple made their home in Newfield and Franklinville, NJ, where they raised their family. Terry was a steadfast and nurturing presence in her children’s lives. During their high school years, she proudly supported the Delsea High School football and wrestling booster clubs. Terry’s commitment to her children extended beyond the athletic field, supporting them in their academic, military, and professional pursuits.

Terry’s professional life was equally impactful. For over 20 years, she worked as a teacher’s assistant at Vineland State School, dedicating herself to the care and education of special needs children. Her kindness, patience, and commitment left a lasting impression on the many students and families she served. In 1999 she retired, and she and Sam moved to Colorado Springs, CO. However, in 2015, the couple returned to Newfield, where Terry continued to live until her passing.

Among her most treasured memories were family vacations to Wildwood Crest, NJ, and special trips to Cancun, MX, with Sam. Terry also had a deep love for animals, and over the years, she shared her home with many beloved pets.
