Samuel Albert DeMore, Jr. – Obituary

Samuel Albert DeMore, Jr., age 90, of Pittsgrove, New Jersey, on January 27, 2026. Beloved husband of 69½ years to Lois Gertrude (née Dickinson) DeMore. Father of Diane L. Harris and her husband Rick, and Samuel W. DeMore and his wife Rhonda. He was a proud grandfather to seven grandchildren, including Ricky Harris; Jaison Harris and his wife Katie; Angela Goulding and her husband Jeremy; Jennifer Criss and her husband David; Christine DeMore; Colt DeMore and his wife Destiny; and Cody DeMore. He was further blessed with six great-grandchildren. He is survived by his siblings, Richard DeMore and his wife Dorothy, Donald DeMore and his wife Barb, and Regina Scherfel. He was preceded in death by his parents, the late Samuel Albert DeMore and Grace Margaret (née Mackay) DeMore.

Sam was a graduate of Pittman High School, Class of 1953. He was raised in Gloucester City and later lived in Sewell, New Jersey. After marrying Lois Dickinson in 1956, they made their home in Clayton, New Jersey, where they raised their family. Together they shared a lifetime of devotion and partnership. In 1997, they built a new home in Pittsgrove, New Jersey, where Sam resided until his passing.

Throughout his working life, Sam was known for his strong work ethic and versatility. For eight years, he served honorably in the Army National Guard. Sam worked as a mechanic at Crown Point Motor Park in Thorofare for five years, followed by seven years as a butcher at Sickles Shop-Rite in Woodbury. Later, he operated a furniture store in the old Post Office building on Center Street for two years until a fire destroyed the business. Sam then spent many years as an over-the-road truck driver for several companies, most notably Safety-Kleen, where he ultimately retired. In retirement, he continued working for a time, driving a limousine for Mantua Livery Service.

Sam was deeply committed to public service and his community. He served as a Clayton Councilman for one year and as Mayor of Clayton for two years, during which time he was instrumental in the development of Little Ease Park and in bringing the Ecko Aluminum manufacturing facility to the borough. He was also a longtime member of the Clayton Fire Department and the Exempt Fireman’s Association.

An avid outdoorsman, Sam enjoyed camping, hunting, and fishing. He owned a small boat and spent many hours fishing on local lakes. He especially loved going out to eat and, for many years, traveling to car races in his motorhome. Above all else, Sam cherished spending time with his family and enjoyed staying connected on his computer.
