GARRETT ‘GARY’ MCCONNELL – Obituary
Garrett Vincent “Gary” McConnell, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, on July 20, 2025, at the age of 79 in Voorhees Township, NJ. Born on June 30, 1946, in Philadelphia, PA, Gary was a beacon of strength, humility, and kindness throughout his life.
Gary was raised in the tight-knit community of Aura in Elk Township before making his home in Clayton, NJ, where he lived for more than 50 years. A proud graduate of Delsea Regional High School, Class of 1964, he was known early on for his strong work ethic and quiet determination, qualities that would define his life.
After high school, Gary honorably served in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. Upon returning home, he began a long and respected career as a union electrician with IBEW Local 351, based in Vineland. Even after retiring in 2001, Gary continued to lend his expertise as a Supply Manager for Joseph R. Delgato, Inc., always finding purpose in helping others.
Gary shared more than 45 wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Caroline McConnell (née Judge). Married on April 7, 1979, their bond was one of enduring love and partnership. He was the father of Robert John Grayson and his wife Tracy Rowe Grayson; Jenny (née Grayson) Marsh and her husband Jim; Lisa McConnell; Chrissy McConnell Skorkowsky and her husband Robert of Fort Collins, CO; and Anna McConnell Krell and her husband Todd of Fort Collins, CO. Gary was a proud grandfather to Ava, Shauna, Nathan, Leah, Trey, Devin, Tyler, Sora, Gannon, Tyler, and Darren.
He was the son of the late Raymond W. and Alice C. (née Tallon) McConnell and a cherished brother to Joyce (the late William) Aldrich, Raymond (Dee) McConnell, Alice (Frank) Gambino, William (Mary) McConnell, Robert (Helen) McConnell, George (Kathy) McConnell, Tom (Karen) McConnell, and the late Dennis, Helen, and John McConnell. Gary is also survived by his sister-in-law, Peggy McConnell, and many nieces and nephews.
Gary’s life was filled with passions, both simple and spirited. He was a devoted member of Saint Catherine of Siena Roman Catholic Church in Clayton, where he quietly served his parish for many years. One of his most meaningful contributions was faithfully mowing the church lawn, a task he approached with pride and care. He loved taking long walks, especially alongside his youngest grandchild and his late dog, Birdie. A frequent visitor to local casinos, Gary enjoyed the excitement and energy of a day out, always with a smile and a sense of humor that made him a joy to be around.
Gary was a man of many talents. A true Master Tinkerer, he could fix just about anything and was always willing to lend a hand. He was an avid reader and a man of few words—but when he spoke, his words carried weight, often offering comfort, clarity, or quiet wisdom. He never judged, always encouraged others to be their authentic selves, and led by example through his kindness and humility. He was incredibly proud of Bob and Jenny and the lives they built with their families. Deeply selfless, Gary was always doing for others—checking in on his siblings weekly and offering support without hesitation. His steady presence and generous spirit will be remembered by all who knew him.
