CHRISTOPHER LEE GEORGE SMORTZ – Obituary
Christopher Lee George Smortz of Clayton on Saturday, February 12, 2022. Age 53. Son of Joyce Ann (nee Rudolph) Kier Smortz Black (David J. Black, husband) and the late George K. Smortz. Brother of Donna M. Flinn (Richard Hecker, boyfriend) of Pitman. Uncle to Jackie Sturgill, John W. Flinn, and Lauren L. Flinn. Cousin to many.
Born in Atlantic City and a lifelong resident of Clayton, Christopher was a 1987 graduate of Clayton High School and the Gloucester County Vocational-Technical School. He worked from an early age with his father at J&G Auction in Franklinville. Later, Christopher worked as a brickmaker for 2 years with Grays Ferry Brick Company followed by 1 year as a production associate with NER, both also in Franklinville. He was a warehouse associate with Triangular Tube for 17 years and recently was a production associate for South Jersey Bakery, both in West Deptford.
His family recalls that Christopher was very much a unique individual. He was very thrifty for himself seeming almost broke, but he would give the shirt off of his back or reach into his pocket to help a friend in need. Christopher was interested in the stock market even as a child and later as an adult would apply that interest to invest in the market. He was an avid churchgoer to the Pitman Church of the Nazarene and often donated blood to help others. While not a gun owner, Christopher was a member of the NRA and a supporter of the Second Amendment.
Relatives and friends are invited to his viewing on Thursday, February 17, 2022, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the BARCLAY FUNERAL HOME, 208 Maple Street, Clayton, NJ 08312. Funeral service at 8:00 PM at the funeral home. Interment private at the convenience of the family.
