Yvonne McCant of Glassboro on Wednesday, June 24, 2026. Age 85.
God looked around his garden and found a space. From heaven, he looked down and saw his faithful servant Yvonne’s precious face, so today, we released the soul of Yvonne Elaine Cundiff McCant to her final resting place.
Born to the late Claude Lee and Elaine Alberta Holbrook Cundiff on February 11, 1941. Upon Yvonne’s birth, her father looked at her and affectionately called her his little Chum. The name stuck, and family and close friends forever knew Yvonne as “Chummy”.
Yvonne began her education in North Wilkesboro, NC, where she attended school from kindergarten through second grade. The family later moved to Glassboro, NJ, to assist her grandfather, Valentine, with the family’s general store, which was later renamed the Cundiff’s General Store. Yvonne spent her third and fourth grade years at South Glassboro School, where she was among the first class of integrated students. Yvonne continued her education, attending Glassboro High School, which was later renamed Glassboro Intermediate School. While in school, Yvonne studied music, honing her operatic soprano voice and excelling in scholastic studies. While attending high school, Yvonne worked as a sales attendant and secretary at Bamberger’s, now known as Macy’s, and the Board of Education, graduating with honors.
Yvonne met and married LeRoy McCant; from this union, three children, Myra, Steven (who preceded her in death), and Eric, were born. Yvonne was a stay-at-home mom until Eric entered school. Yvonne worked in several professions, such as a school Bus driver. Notary Republic, and the Board of Education, before returning to her most widely remembered position as school secretary and later as an administrative assistant. Working at J. Harvey Rodgers Elementary School, Intermediate Jr. High School, Thomas E. Bowe Elementary School, and Dorothy L. Bullock Elementary School (the first school in the Glassboro School System to be named after a local African American Educator), from which Yvonne retired
Yvonne was very active in the community, participating in the PTA, Girl Scouts of America, and numerous community development initiatives, such as the Early Childhood Development Breakfast program, Adult Daycare program, and redevelopment of the Elsmere Low Income Housing project. She was instrumental in the development of the All-Star Club, which was later renamed Martin Luther King Community Center, the Glassboro Housing Authority, and working with special needs persons, a program which was close to her heart.
Yvonne accepted Christ at an early age, serving at St. Mark U.A.M.E Church in Aura, NJ, as a member of the choir, secretary, steward, and Sunday school teacher. After the closing of the church, she joined Bethal A.M.E. church and resumed her duties.
Yvonne and her brother (Jr.) relocated to Houston, Texas, living on a street (December Pine Lane) that reminded her of her favorite holiday, Christmas. She joined the Champion Forrest Baptist Church and resumed her Christian duties by starting the church’s first Special Needs Sunday school ministry.
Due to declining health, Yvonne returned to New Jersey in May of 2021 to reside with her daughter and son until her passing.
