WILLIAM JAMES ‘WINNIE’ HUGHES, SR. – Obituary

William James “Winnie” Hughes, Sr. on Wednesday, February 12, 2020.  Age 82.  Husband of 50 years to Joyce Ann Hughes (nee Powell).  Father of Peggy (Alex) Muzyka, John (Michele) Hughes, Sue Gandy, and the late Bill Hughes, Jr.  Grandfather of William J. “B.J.” Hughes, III, Mason Hughes, the late Richie Hughes, Brandon Muzyka, Ryan Muzyka, Hunter Hughes, Marla Hughes, and Leah Gandy.  Great-grandfather of Lexie.  Son of the late Mason and Grace (nee Blowe) Hughes, Sr.

Born in Collingswood Heights and raised in Clayton, Winnie has been a resident of Franklinville for the past 52 years.  He was a 1957 graduate of Clayton High School where he was a star quarterback and outstanding baseball player and proudly served two years in the US Marine Corps earning the rank of Private, First Class before his discharge in 1959.  Winnie worked as an elevator mechanic for 37 years out of the International Union of Elevator Constructors, Local 5 before his retirement in 1998.  He was a 20-year member of the Marine Corps League, 204 Semper Fidelis Detachment in Wenonah and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and playing the slot machines at the casinos.  Baseball and football were his passion; he coached Franklinville Little League for 20 years for all of his children and was a fan of the Phillies, Eagles, and Flyers.  Family was everything to Winnie, and nothing came before his wife and children.

Relatives and friends are invited to his viewing on Wednesday, February 19, 2020 from 6:00 PM to 8:45 PM at the BARCLAY FUNERAL HOME, 208 Maple Street, Clayton, NJ 08312.  Marine Corps League service at 8:45 PM.  Inurnment on Thursday at 11:00 AM at the Gloucester County Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 240 N.
