Thomas Edward Meteyer
DOB October 18, 1945
Thomas (Tom) Edward Meteyer of Mullica Hill, NJ, passed away peacefully on June 24, 2024 at age 78. He is survived by his wife, Susan E Smith, also of Mullica Hill; brother Michael (Kate Byrnes) of San Rafael, CA; sister Mary Jo (Jeff Baker) of Rochester, New York; brother Richard of Geneva, NY; sister-in-law Cynthia VandeGrift (Mark) and brother-in-law Michael Smith (Janet). He is also survived by niece Lauren Eckert, who resided with him, as well as nieces Emma Meteyer and Elizabeth Meteyer; and nephews Daniel Meteyer, Matthew Meteyer, and John Meteyer. He was predeceased by his father Thomas O. Meteyer and mother Joyce T. Meteyer (nee Miller).
Tom was born in Rochester, NY, on October 18, 1945. His father piloted P-51 Mustang airplanes in the European theater during World War II. His mother was a homemaker, raising four children in a community that included many cousins, aunts and uncles. Tom attended McQuaid Jesuit High School and St. John Fischer College, graduating with a degree in chemistry. He went on to Syracuse University where he earned a PhD in organic chemistry.
After spending six months learning Portuguese on a National Science Foundation grant at Northwestern University, he spent two years in Brazil setting up a graduate chemistry program and teaching chemistry in Portuguese at the University of São Paulo. Upon returning to the states, he was employed by Rohm and Haas, a specialty chemical company, and spent his career doing research there. During his retirement, he enjoyed traveling, dining out with family and friends, researching World War II topics, family genealogy, and keeping up with his large extended family. Tom was an active member of the Catholic Church and involved godfather to Lauren and Matthew.
