SHIRLEY ANITA CASSADAY- Obituary

Shirley Anita Cassaday (nee LaRue) of Clayton on Sunday, September 5, 2021. Age 94. Wife of 59 years to the late Frederick W. Cassaday, Sr. Mother of Judith Hagerty (William), Paul Cassaday (Virginia), Sandra Horsfield (John), Susan Humphries, Linda Rainey (Jeffrey), Gail Miller (Thomas), and the late Fred Cassaday, Jr. (Rhonda, surviving). Grandmother of 19, great-grandmother of 14, and great-great-grandmother of 2. Aunt to many nieces and nephews. Sister of the late Eleanor Steward and Charles “Chots” LaRue. Daughter of the late Edward C. and Mary L. (nee Hoyt) LaRue.

Born and raised briefly in Hammonton, Shirley has lived most of her life in Clayton along with a few years in Elk Township both during her youth and later in life. She was a devoted wife and mother and a member of the First Baptist Church of Clayton where she sang in the choir, taught 4C Club and Sunday School, and served as Deaconess for many years. She, along with her husband, started the Fishermen’s Club and Senior Saints program. She was a faithful supporter of Child Evangelism and held 5-day clubs in her backyard. Shirley was very charitable volunteering at Elmer Hospital, with Vitas Hospice, and with Multiple Sclerosis to walk the neighborhood for many years collecting contributions. She was an avid fisherman and loved gardening as well as reading newspapers and maps. Shirley was a naturally-gifted artist, a great cook and excellent baker, and her artistic talents were shown in her cake decorating abilities. Her children recalled that she could be very much the comedian and was very funny.

Relatives and friends are invited to her funeral service on Saturday, September 11, 2021, at 11:00 AM at the First Baptist Church of Clayton, 110 S. Delsea Drive, Clayton, NJ 08312 where friends may call from 9:00 AM until service time. Interment at Cedar Green Cemetery, Clayton. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to First Baptist Church of Clayton or the Alzheimer’s Association, PO Box 96011, Washington, DC 20090-6011.
