Robert Chester Hains on Saturday, August 31, 2019. Age 89. Husband of the late Joyce L. Hains. Father of Robert “Bob” Hains (friend Rick), Thomas Hains (wife Bonnie), and Richard “Rick” Hains (wife Bette). Grandfather of Jami Hains, Kyle Hains (fiancé Emily Baptiste), and Erin Boone (husband Jordan). Great-grandfather of Casey Hains and Jordyn Hains. Brother of Donald Hains (Velma) and Doris Gerber. Son of the late Chester and Elsie (nee Hepler) Hains.
Born in Reading, PA and raised in Wyomissing, PA, Robert enlisted in the US Navy after graduating high school and proudly served for 4 years, earning the rank of Radioman Third Class before his honorable discharge in 1955. After leaving the Navy, he moved to Reading with his wife Joyce and took a job as an Office Manager for ARA in Pottstown which later became Aramark and eventually moved to Norristown. During that time, Robert and Joyce moved from Reading to Pottstown where they lived until his retirement in 1996. They left Pottstown and became “snowbirds” splitting their time between Rehoboth, DE and Lakeland, FL. Robert has most recently been a resident of Clayton for the past 12 years since shortly before Joyce’s death in 2007.
Robert loved the beach and Rehoboth Beach was his favorite place; he could sit on the boardwalk and watch the water for hours. In 1970, they bought their first summer home there and continued to maintain a home in Rehoboth for 40 years. During that time Robert owned several boats, initially fishing boats and later pontoon boats. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, but his love for cars may be most remembered. Robert had many, many cars over the years, too many to count. It would not be unusual for him to have 15-20 cars in a ten year period. He could spend days, weeks, even months haggling to get the best price. Joyce and his children never knew when he would drive up with another new car.
Relatives and friends are invited to a visit with the family on Sunday, September 22, 2019 from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM at the Knights of Columbus, 675 Constitution Avenue, Pottstown, PA 19464 with a Memorial Service scheduled to begin at 1:00 PM. Funeral arrangements under the direction of the BARCLAY FUNERAL HOME. Sign the guestbook and send condolences at BarclayFuneralHome.net.
