Results of state-funded GC sobriety patrols
Gloucester County police officers on special patrols targeting impaired drivers in the last three weeks of December 2016 charged 33 motorists with alcohol or drug-influenced driving and issued more than 200 other MV violations. The Gloucester County Prosecutor’s Office distributed $45,000 to police departments in 13 towns for extra patrols during a time when impaired driving typically increases by nearly 10 percent. As a result, 28 drivers were charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and five were arrested for drug-influenced driving.
In addition, 104 drivers were charged with speeding, 79 received summonses for failing to use seat belts, 21 were charged with reckless driving, 17 with careless driving and 14 with texting while driving. The grant from the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety was part of the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” statewide campaign that uses high-visibility enforcement and public education to raise awareness about the dangers of driving under the influence.
“This enforcement campaign by our police departments made our roadways safer during a dangerous time of the year,” Gloucester County Prosecutor Sean F. Dalton said. “We appreciate and thank them for their fine work.”
Participating police departments were Clayton, Glassboro, Pitman Westville and Woodbury and the townships of Deptford, East Greenwich, Greenwich, Harrison, Logan, Mantua, Monroe and Washington.
