RABIES ALERT FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP
(Franklinville, NJ) – Residents should be aware that a raccoon found in the vicinity of 304 Pear Tree Court, which is in close proximity to Mary F. Janvier Elementary School, on March 15, 2019 has tested positive for rabies.
Rabies is a deadly disease caused by a virus in the saliva of infected animals. If left untreated can cause death. Post exposure treatment is needed immediately.
All pet owners are urged to check the vaccination status of their pets. Avoiding wild animals and keeping your distance from stray dogs and cats.
Be aware that raccoons also feed in areas where outside cats are fed. In order to ensure your safety, the Gloucester County Health Department recommends that your pets have their current rabies vaccinations.
Gloucester County is offering a free Rabies vaccination clinic on Saturday, April 27 from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at the Public Works Garage, 1702 Hurffville Road, Deptford. For questions about the Rabies Clinics contact the Gloucester County Department of Health at (856) 218-4101.
Additionally, the Heath Department advises the following:
* ADVISE YOUR CHILDREN NOT TO HANDLE STRAY OR UNFAMILIAR ANIMALS, AS WELL AS WILDLIFE.
* IF YOU SEE AN ANIMAL THAT APPEARS DISORIENTED OR EXHIBITS STRANGE BEHAVIOR, DO NOT HANDLE IT. IMMEDIATELY NOTIFY THE GLOUCESTER COUNTY ANIMAL CONTROL OFFICE AT (856) 881-2828.
