Lawrence (Larry) Kellum Sr, son of the late Clarence Kellum Sr and Constance Patterson Kellum, was born January 3, 1943 in Salem. He departed this life on July 7, 2019 at home in Clayton surrounded by his loving wife of 51 years, children, siblings, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
After receiving his education in Salem, he was drafted by the United States Army where he served his country from 1964 to 1966. He was honorably discharged on April 28, 1966.
In 1968, he was united in Holy Matrimony to Bertha A. Williams and from this union Larry, Brady, Desna and Debbie were born. Larry was a devoted husband, proud father, and a generous and loving grandfather.
After his military service, Larry worked as a Safety Police Officer for the Borough of Clayton, then was employed by Acme Markets, Consumer Markets, and the Franklin Skating Rink, before spending the bulk of his career at duPont in Deepwater, NJ. After retiring from duPont, he was self-employed as a house painter.
Larry was a member of the Pitman Road Church of Christ for 51 years. In his younger years, he enjoyed bowling in leagues in both Woodstown and Delaware. His true passion however, was for the game of tennis where he earned the nickname “Slice and Dice.” You could find Larry on the tennis court almost any day of the week.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters Doris Fields and Bernice Rohn.
Larry leaves to cherish his memory: his wife, Bertha A Kellum; sons, Lawrence Kellum, Jr (Lea Ann) and William Brady Kellum I (Elizabeth); daughters, Desna L. Kellum-Yanzuk (Joseph) and Deborah A. Contravo; grandsons, Daniel Freeman, William Brady Kellum II, Stephen P. Yanzuk, Benjamin E. Kellum, Nicholas A. Contravo Jr, and Johnathan L. Contravo; granddaughters, Aubrey E. Greenleaf (Luke), Alivia G. Contravo, Miranda J. Yanzuk, Mikayla V. Kellum, and Elizabeth J. Kellum; great-grandsons, Zachary A. Greenleaf, Xavier Greenleaf and Valarik L. Greenleaf; brothers, Clarence Kellum Jr (Janice), Bernard Kellum (Marianne), and Ernest Kellum (Norma); sisters, Betty Jones, Ernestine Gaines, and twin sister Florence Dixon (Frank); Uncle, Melvin Patterson; long-time friends, Craig Welburn, Diane Welburn, Alex Conway, and Patricia Brooke, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends.
Celebration of Life Service for Lawrence will be held at 5:00 pm on Sunday, July 14, 2019, at Pitman Road Church of Christ, 500 Pitman Road, Sewell, NJ 08080, where viewing will be from 3:00-5:00 pm.
His interment will take place at 11:00 am on Monday, July 15, 2019, in the Gloucester County Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 240 N. Tuckahoe Road, Williamstown, New Jersey 08094.
