JAMES BARRY-BOGARD GATES – Obituary

James Barry-Bogard Gates on Saturday, August 18, 2018.  Age 74.  Loving Husband of 52 years to Diane S. Gates (nee Cole).  Father of Velvet Gates (Fred), Corrina Schemeley (Michelle), Tammy Gates (Rick), Jean (John) DeGrosa, and Tina (Darren) McCafferty.  Grandfather of Amanda (Paul) Dzindzio, Kate (Nick) Hofbauer, James (Ashley) Schemeley, Cody Watson, Jarred McCafferty, and Jacob McCafferty.  Great-grandfather of Orion Schemeley, Novalee Schemeley, Benjamin Dzindzio, and Nathan Dzindzio.  Brother of Rich (Pat) Gates, Annette Brady, Linda Gates, and five others who predeceased him.  Brother-in-law of Bill (Penny) Cole.  Uncle to Martha (Eddy) Begley and MacKenzie Cole.  Great-Uncle to Karly Begley, Cole Begley, and Landon.  Son of the late Charlie and Ottie (nee Grooms) Gates.

Born in Bridgeton and raised in Monroeville, James was a resident of Clayton for 9 years and most recently of Pittsgrove for the past 28 years.  He worked as a slitter operator for Aleris Rolled Products, Inc. in Clayton for 41 years until his retirement in 2014.  Known as Uncle Jay to his many nieces and nephews, James loved playing the guitar with his band “Jay + The Inventors”.  He also loved metal detecting for “treasures” and especially spending time with his family. He will be greatly missed by many.
