I-295 north and Route 42 north ramp to I-295 north to be closed and detoured overnight this weekend in Bellmawr
I-76 also scheduled to have a series of temporary stoppages overnight
(Trenton) – New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced overnight closures this weekend of I-295 northbound and the Route 42 northbound ramp to I-295 northbound as the Direct Connection project advances in Camden and Gloucester counties.
Starting at 11 p.m. tonight, Friday, December 1 until 5 a.m. Saturday morning, I-295 northbound will be closed with traffic detoured onto I-76 westbound, and the Route 42 northbound ramp to I-295 northbound will be closed and detoured to allow for the removal of an overhead sign structure over I-295 and Route 42 northbound/I-76 westbound.
The left lane of I-76 eastbound will be closed during construction and I-76 westbound will have the two right lanes closed from 10 p.m. Friday, December 1 until 5 a.m. Saturday morning as part of thedemolition of an overpass that began earlier this week. In addition, I-76 westbound will be temporarily be closed completely a few times for approximately 20 minutes each time to remove the structure.
The following detours will be in effect:
I-295 northbound
· Motorists traveling on I-295 north will be directed to stay left and take Exit 26 for I-76 westbound
· Once on I-76 westbound, stay right and take Exit 2 for I-676 northbound
· Take Exit 1, Collins Avenue
· Turn right at the end of the ramp onto Collins Avenue and turn left onto I-676 south to I-76 east
· Take Exit 1B to I-295 north
Route 42 northbound to I-295 northbound
· Motorists traveling on Route 42 north will be directed to stay on Route 42, which becomes I-76 westbound
· Once on I-76 westbound, stay right and take Exit 2 for I-676 northbound
· Take Exit 1, Collins Avenue
· Turn right at the end of the ramp onto Collins Avenue and turn left onto I-676 south to I-76 east
· Take Exit 1B to I-295 north
Variable message signs are being utilized throughout the project limits to provide advance notification to motorists of all traffic pattern changes associated with Direct Connection. Throughout the project, NJDOT will provide information before upcoming lane closures or traffic shifts.
This work is part of the $900 million Direct Connection project that will provide a seamless route for I-295 motorists traveling through the interchange of I-295, I-76, and Route 42. The Direct Connection project has been divided into four separate construction contracts, with completion of the fourth and final contract expected in the fall of 2021.
