FIREFIGHTERS INJURED IN FATAL HOUSE FIRE

On Thursday, February 20 at approximately 8:05am, the Elk Township Police Department was dispatched to Marion Street, Elk Township,(Gloucester County) for a report of a dwelling fire. Officers arrived to find the residence engulfed by heavy smoke and fire. Fire Departments from Aura, Ferrell, Glassboro, Clayton, Franklinville, Harmony, Ewan, Monroeville, Mantua, and Highland responded and extinguished the fire. A female was subsequently found deceased inside of the residence. The deceased female was a 73-year-old resident of Elk Township, whose identity is being withheld pending notification of the family. An 85-year-old male, who had made it out of the house prior to police arrival, was transported to the hospital for non -life-threatening injuries. Four Firefighters sustained minor injuries during the fighting of the fire and were treated on scene. The fire is being investigated collaboratively by the Gloucester County Fire Marshal’s Office, Gloucester County Prosecutor’s Office, and the Elk Township Police Department. The investigation is ongoing.
