Press Release from FTPD 7/17/2019
On Tuesday, July 16th, at approximately 7:45PM hours, the Franklin Township Police Department was dispatched to the 2400 block of Main Road for the report of a single vehicle crash with multiple entrapped occupants. Upon arrival, it was determined that a 2010 GMC Acadia had been traveling south on Main Road, when it crossed over the north bound lane, and off the roadway to the left. Once the vehicle traveled off the roadway, it struck a mailbox, a utility pole, and a full size tree, bringing down the utility pole and wires. The vehicle had been occupied by three subjects. The driver of the vehicle, identified as Jorge Cervantes, 26 year old male, from Williamstown, was unconscious and unresponsive with severe head injuries. A rear seat passenger, identified as his wife, Mary Ortiz, 24 year old female from Williamstown, was unconscious and unresponsive with head injuries. The front seat passenger, identified as Emmanuel Ortiz-Rosas, 27 year old male from Williamstown, was conscious and alert and had minor injuries. Ortiz-Rosas stated the crash occurred due to Cervantes possibly falling asleep while driving. Both Cervantes and Ortiz were removed from the vehicle by fire personnel and airlifted to Cooper Trauma for their injuries. Ortiz-Rosas was transported by ambulance to Cooper Trauma. Due to the extent of injuries sustained in the crash, Cervantes was pronounced deceased at Cooper Trauma. Ortiz is listed in critical, but stable condition. Investigation at the scene determined alcohol and or drugs were not a factor in the cause of the accident.
Assisting at the scene were the Malaga Fire Department, Forest Grove Fire Department, Gloucester County EMS, Inspira Paramedics, Cooper Trauma Medivac Units, and Atlantic City Electric. The crash is being investigated by Sergeant Jeffrey McGuigan.
