EDITH OLSEN CASSADAY – Obituary

 Edith Olsen Cassaday, age 99, passed away peacefully on May 19, 2022.  She was born in Janvier section of Franklin Township where she lived her entire life except for extensive travel with her husband during WWII and her stay at Jefferson Health Care Center for the last few years.  She graduated from Clayton High School in 1940 and was Valedictorian of her class.  She graduated from Camden Commercial School in 1941.

Edith was predeceased by her parents John Frederick Olsen and Mary K. Olsen, two brothers Harold and John Jr. Olsen, a sister Mary Gertrude Wilford and her husband of 48 years Carlton Fisler Cassaday Jr.  She is survived by her son Carlton Frederick Cassaday of Piscataway, NJ and grandsons Carlton Frederick Cassaday Jr. and wife Michele of Bel Air MD.  Peter Joseph Cassaday of Piscataway, three great- grandchildren, Kaitlin, Eric and Megan Cassaday of Bel Air.  Also, her Sister-in law Hazel Olsen, several Olsen Nieces and Nephews and her special friend Thelbert “Pug” Snyder.  She is also survived by many she viewed as family, the Blazos of NJ and Ohio, the Vandermillens of RI and the Englishs, Wilsons, and Snyders of NJ.

Edith grew up on a farm, where she helped for many years and always had a very large vegetable garden behind her house.   She worked first as a legal secretary, then in shipyards on both coasts during the war and retired from Rutgers Cooperative Extension Service of Gloucester County in Clayton as Administrative Clerk and Supervisor of Clerical Staff after 27 years.  She was a member of the Delsea Regional School Board for six years when the school was built, a life member of The NJ Congress of the PTA,  served 35 years on the County Board of Directors of The American Red Cross , organized many local blood drives and donated over 100 pints of blood herself.  She was a member of The First Presbyterian Church of Janvier for 85 years serving as an Elder and Clerk of the Session during that time.   She managed and cared for the Janvier  Cemetery for many years.  She was a member of the District Two Election Board for 36 years.  She was an avid baker and was well known for her Christmas cookies.

Relatives and Friends may call from 6 PM to 8 PM on Tuesday, May 24, 2022 and from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM on Wednesday, May 25th at the BARCLAY FUNERAL HOME, 208 Maple Street, Clayton.  Funeral service on Wednesday at 11:00 AM at the funeral home.  Interment will be at The Janvier Cemetery, Franklinville.  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to The First Presbyterian Church of Janvier, PO Box 573, Franklinville, NJ 08322.
