DIXIE J. TOAL – Obituary

Dixie J. Toal (nee Campbell), age 79, of Franklinville, NJ, passed from death to eternal life on November 9, 2019. Dixie worked hard to raise her children, while volunteering at her local hospital, working part-time, and attending college and nursing education. She fell in love with emergency nursing, working in emergency departments in New Jersey and Philadelphia. Later, she worked as Registered Professional Nurse Manager (neurology)/RN at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania for many years before retiring. She was a devoted and determined advocate for her children, family, friends as well as for patients throughout her life. She lived out her belief in the words of her Savior, Jesus Christ, “ For I was hungry and you fed me; I was thirsty and you gave me water; I was a stranger and you invited me into your homes; I was naked and you clothed me; sick and in prison, and you visited me’….And I, the King, will tell them, ‘When you did it to these my brothers, you were doing it to me!’”– Matthew 25: 35-40 (TLT). Her strongest gift was that of active empathy for others in true need. Having grown through severe losses early in life, she was generous in giving of time and energy for others in need. She was courageous in speaking out for others as well as for her principles. She was a mentor and relentless source of encouragement to family, friends, patients, and colleagues. Dixie was fierce and diligent in ensuring her youngest son, Roger, received the best therapies. With perseverance, she believed he would sit up, walk, read, and function well, in spite of prognoses indicating otherwise. Her son Roger remained at the forefront of her mind throughout her whole life and today engages in all such functions. She was a strong mother, who loved her children with her whole heart, while teaching them strength and independence. She helped to ensure that her children were taught in the faith, grace, and hope of Christ, and to not only attend church but encouraged involvement in church activities. She enjoyed reading, movies, shopping, trips to visit family, but mostly she enjoyed speaking with family and friends. We most deeply grieve her loss, yet we rejoice at what she has gained in Christ. Dixie was the beloved wife of William G. Toal, Sr. Devoted mother of Gregory, Timothy (Laurie), Judith (David), Roger, and predeceased by her infant son, Thomas. She was stepmother to William, Jr., Brian, Colleen, Corrine. Loving grandmother to Jeremy, Ariel (Keith), Joshua, Meghaen (CJ), Jonathan (Brittany), Patricia, Scott, Brian, Jaclyn, Bobby, and Sidni, and great grandmother to Audrey, Gabriella, Timothy, Joel, and Emory. Dear sister of her brothers (predeceased) Kenneth, Floyd W., Jerry L., and survived by loving nieces, nephews, and cousins. Relatives and friends are invited to her viewing on Friday, November 15th from 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM, where a service will be held at 12:00 PM at the Farnelli Funeral Home, 504 N. Main Street, Williamstown. Burial will follow in the Gloucester County Veterans Memorial Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Salvation Army.
