After a tough 41-26 away loss to Hunterdon Central, Delsea wrestling dropped to 2-2. There were plenty of chances for Delsea to right their record, with a total of 4 matches upcoming in the week. Delsea had the perfect bounceback match in 1-3 Triton, a change from their usual schedule of top 20 teams. Delsea dominated an outmatched Triton 59-12.
Both Justin Dougherty (5:45) and Nick Bennett (:51) won their matches via pinfall. Travis Griffith, John Patterson, Edison Echavarria, Tommy Maxwell, and Justin Moore all won via forfeit. At 132 Delsea freshman Tim Spatola defeated Chance Donahue with a 14-3 major decision. At 182, Vince DeGeorge also won with a major decision, defeating Nicholas Libetore 12-4. At 145 Delsea’s Vito Genna defeated Mason Dunn 3-1.
With their blowout match against Triton in the books, Delsea prepared for their Saturday quad against Jackson Memorial, Northern Highlands, and #19 in NJ Pope John. Despite the snowstorm outside the quad was not canceled!
Delsea’s first match came against tough Jackson Memorial, who Delsea defeated handily 49-12. At 106 Chris McDonald defeated Delsea’s Justin Dougherty 7-1. At 113 Jackson Memorial’s Vincent Scollo defeated Travis Griffith in a 10-2 Major decision. The only other Delsea loss of the match came at 138 when Matt McGowan tech falled Phillip Pierson 17-2.
At 120 John Patterson easily defeated Jeremiah Nash 7-0. Edison Echavarria pinned Brandon Burkert in 1:19 at 126. At 132 Freshman Tim Spatola picked up another win with a 4-2 decision over Cartsen Digiantomasso. Nick Bennett picked up a 5-2 decision at 145, and Seth Summers picked up a 5-3 decision at 152. At 160 Mason Maxwell pinned Dan Bergeron in 3:42, and Bill Janzer pinned Leo Shimonovich in 1:05 at 170. Vince DeGeorge added another pin (1:13) at 182, as did Tommy Maxwell (:27) at 195. Justin Moore picked up a 6-3 decision over Dave Lemay at 220, and Malcolm Henry earned a 13-0 Major Decision victory at heavyweight.
In their next match of the quad, Delsea defeated Northern Highlands handily 53-16. At 106 Justin Dougherty picked up a 7-4 decision victory. At 113 Northern Highland’s Devin Iannelli pinned Travis Griffith in 1:06. Delsea would receive two straight pins at 120 and 126. At 132 Tim Spatola pinned Jack Post in 3:25. Nick Bennett added another pin (2:31) at 138. Northern Highlands’ picked up a victory at 145 with an Edmund Iannelli 14-2 major decision.
Delsea would have a pair of pins at 152 and 160, with Seth Summers pinning Benjamin Kaplan in :41, and Mason Maxwell pinning Riley Haab in 1:26. At 170 Bill Janzer destroyed Anthony Sciuto with a 23-8 tech fall. Northern Highlands picked up a victory at 182 with a 4-2 decision. Tommy Maxwell had another quick pin, this time pinning Mike Reyes in :16. Northern Highlands’ Thomas Hamrah defeated Justin Moore at 220 3-1. Finally Malcolm Henry picked up his 2nd win of the day at heavyweight with a 5-0 decision.
With their 3rd match of the quad came the big one, Pope John. Pope John had defeated their first two opponents as well. Delsea would lose their 3rd match of the season to Pope John 40-27. The match started off at 285, when Pope John’s Louis Montana pinned Justin Moore in 2:06. Mathew Garcia defeated Delsea’s Justin Dougherty in a 14-2 major decision to go up 10-0. Delsea made it 10-6 with a forfeit victory at 113, but an Eddie Ventresca 13-2 major decision over John Patterson at 120 made it 14-6. At 126 Pope John’s Joseph Aragona defeated Edison Echavarria 7-2 and Jake Rotunda tech falled Delsea’s Tim Spatola 17-2 to make it 22-6. At 138 Pope John picked up another pin to make it 28-6. A Ryan Luchs 5-2 victory over Nick Bennett made it 31-6.
Delsea picked up a victory at 152 with a Seth Summers 15-4 major decision over Anthony Rispoli to make it 31-10. Pope John picked up another victory at 160 with Reece Mulduun 4-2 decision victory over Mason Maxwell. At 170 Bill Janzer pinned James Swentzel in 1:48. Vince DeGeorge and Tommy Maxwell both received pinfall victories for a final score of 40-27.
Delsea will look to bounce back from the tough loss with a home match against 4-1 St. John Vianney. Afterward, Delsea will wrestle 0-5 Deptford. Delsea will host another quad on Saturday. 3-6 Kingsway, 2-1 Old Bridge, and 6-3 Woodbridge.
