Coming off a 21 to 6 win over Willingboro Twp. last week, Delsea had a tough game against West Deptford on Friday night falling to the Eagles 27-12. West Deptford was coming off a 19 to 14 season opening loss to Paulsboro. Delsea was feeling good about their season opener ending in a win but soon realized they had a very big game ahead against a competitive West Deptford team. Friday night’s game was on the road for the 2nd straight game and it was a very slow start for Delsea. West Deptford scored on it’s first two possessions after a fumble inside Delsea’s 20 yard line and a blocked punt. This lead to two West Deptford rushing touchdowns in the 1st half. Before halftime Delsea struggled to get past midfield while West Deptford added two more field goals to extend their lead 20 to 0 at halftime.
Delsea opened up the 2nd half with a touchdown run by Keison Fowler with the extra point being no good which made the score 20-6. West Deptford came right back with a touchdown run of their own, which now made the score 27-6 with 7 minutes left in the game. With minimal time left in the game, Delsea had one more big play with quarterback James Vargo throwing a slant to RB Shaikyi Hannah for a 73 yard touchdown catch with about 2 minutes left in the game. West Deptford ran the remaining time off the clock and secured the 27-12 win. As Coach Sal Marchese told his players “we have to stay focused, take one practice at a time and get better everyday.” RB Shaikyi Hannah stated “ we have to start quicker, we were down 20-0 at halftime and we didn’t get our momentum going until the 3rd quarter. Delsea had a big loss before Friday night’s game with starting G Kevin Gilliano going down with a minor injury. Gilliano will hopefully be back soon to restore a strong O-line. RB Aidan Borguet and C Colin Poisker stated “ This is a wake-up call and it shows that we are obviously not where we want to be yet, but we can get there over time, we also have to focus more in practice and this will better prepare us for the big games.” Delsea looks to get back in the win column on Friday, September 21st, against Camden for their home opener.
