DELSEA BASKETBALL WEEK IN REVIEW – Sentinel Sports

DELSEA BASKETBALL WEEK IN REVIEW

By Sentinel of Gloucester County Sports Writer Jacob Keppen

It was another fairly successful week for the Delsea basketball teams. Both teams played two games, and Delsea won three out of the four games, a pretty successful week.  The boys entered the week hoping to ride off the momentum from their last week, a week that saw two big wins over Gloucester Catholic and Haddon Heights. Delsea, for their first game hosted the one win Schalick Cougars. Delsea won the game, despite not looking their best, 54-40.

Javon Gordon had one of his best games yet against the Cougars. Schalick’s defense had almost no answer for the sophomore guard, as Gordon scored 21 points. Gordon was also active on the boards, grabbing nine rebounds. To solidify a great game for Gordon, he had four assists and three steals. More all around great games like this hopefully will become a normal occurrence for the young guard.

Kolby Braxton also had a good all around game. While other top Crusader scorers were struggling to put points on the board, Braxton picked up his game. Braxton scored 10 points and dished four assists. Braxton was active on defense, earning six assists.

Schalick’s Eli Boose was a star for the Cougars. Boose had a double double, 14 points and 13 rebounds, completely controlling the game. Boose had three blocks while Tyreese Snipe had four blocks.

Delsea hosted Hammonton in their next game, knowing that they would have to play better than they did against Schalick. Delsea played much better in their 59-40 victory over Hammonton. Kamel Morton got back on track in the win scoring 21 points. Nate Cox scored eight points and Aziz Saud scored seven points. Brice Parks was active on the boards, grabbing eight rebounds. Kolby Braxton dished out five assists.

The big victory allowed Delsea to dive deeper into their roster, and allow some playing time to more players. This includes: Malcolm Mattocks who grabbed four rebounds, Lennaris Gordon who grabbed two rebounds, and Gabe Asuncion who scored two points.

Delsea will have a huge game against 5-3 Glassboro next week, as well as a big game against 4-3 Woodstown.

Delsea Girl’s Basketball entered the week undefeated after defeating Lower Cape May 29-28 in the final of the Jay Craven Memorial Bracket at the Boardwalk Classic in Wildwood. In their first of two away games, Delsea traveled to one win Schalick. They defeated the Cougars 41-31, but just like the boys in their win they could’ve played better. They could’ve defeated a lone win Cougars team by much more than ten points.

Delsea had their biggest game of the season so far next, playing 4-2 Kingsway. They were going to be Delsea’s biggest challenge of the season by far, and that translated into the Crusaders’ first loss of the season. Kingsway dominated in the first half, especially in the first quarter where they scored 22 points to Delsea’s 10. Kingsway was up 36-19 at halftime. Delsea tried to make a comeback with a huge 14 point third quarter, but could not complete the comeback losing 45-38

Kingsway’s Maddie Hahn simply couldn’t be stopped, scoring 24 points. Deja Lowry scored nine points. Delsea’s Wykira Johnson was her usual self, scoring 18 points. She grabbed ten rebounds for a double-double. Glory Morton scored nine points and had nine rebounds.

Delsea will try to rebound from their first loss of the season with their next game, a huge one, against Gloucester Catholic.
