David John Black, Sr., age 77, on March 9, 2025, in Clayton, New Jersey. Born on October 25, 1947, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, David was the son of the late James and Ann Black (nee Leitch). His early years were spent growing up in Collingswood, and he later settled in Clayton, where he lived for the past 28 years.
David attended Collingswood High School, where he was known for his quick wit and friendly demeanor. Before he could graduate, he was drafted into the Army but chose to enlist in the Navy instead. He served honorably during the Vietnam War from December 8, 1967, to November 25, 1969, as a machinist on the aircraft carrier USS Saratoga stationed off the coast of Vietnam. David’s stories of his time on the Saratoga were a testament to his pride in his service and his love for his country.
After his military service, David was determined to continue his education and completed his GED. Over the years, he earned numerous certificates in fire training, demonstrating his commitment to personal growth and community service. His career spanned over two decades as a warehouse worker for Augsburg Fortress, a printing company for the Lutheran Church located outside of Philadelphia, until his retirement in 1992. He continued to work in various warehouse jobs, including at NER and DrugStore.com, before finally retiring in 2010.
In 1996, David married the love of his life, Joyce A. Black (née Rudolph), and together they shared 28 years of a marriage filled with love, laughter, and unwavering support. He was a devoted and cherished stepfather to Donna M. Flinn (Richard S. Hecker) and the late Christopher L. Smortz. As a loving grandfather, he shared a special bond with his grandson, Jacob Klingler. David was a caring and supportive brother to Jim Black (Linda) and John K. Black (Carol), who will always remember his generous spirit and infectious laughter. David is also survived by several nieces and nephews, who will forever treasure the memories of their uncle.

David was a passionate Philadelphia sports fan, always cheering for the Phillies, Flyers, and Eagles with enthusiasm and dedication. He rarely missed a game and loved discussing the latest plays and scores. Additionally, he enjoyed watching college soccer and football, relishing the excitement and energy of the games. When not watching sports, David could often be found unwinding with a TV show.
