CHARLES MERRICK GREEN, JR. – Obituary

Charles Merrick Green, Jr., 88, of Ocean View, NJ., passed away suddenly on December 7, 2019, with his daughter Betty Sue and her husband Bill at his side. His granddaughter Merrick, away at Eastern University, was with him by phone.  Charles was born at home in Clayton, NJ to Charles Merrick and Elsie Jane (nee Debring) Green. The youngest of three, he was the baby brother to two older sisters, Jane and Helen.  In 1951, he married his bride of 65 years Elizabeth “Betty” Reamer of Pitman, NJ who he lost in 2016 after providing for her every need for five years while she suffered from Alzheimer’s. Charles retired from DuPont and, to his last day, still carried his locker key to the work locker that no longer existed. An avid hunter for most of his life, he and his fellow church buddies looked forward to their annual trips to Maine and Canada.  Every fall Charles enjoyed all of the hunting seasons.

After living on Maple Street for 20 years, Charles and Betty moved to Silver Lake, a private lake in Clayton.  People used to joke about how his property was so well-manicured and cared for.  Leaves were not allowed!  Born with a green thumb, it was rumored he could grow grass on concrete!  As a founding member of the Clayton Historical Committee, he was the member that knew everyone and remembered everything about them.  Until very recently, Charles’ memory was remarkable.  In 2014, Charles and Betty moved to Shore Acres in Ocean View to be closer to his family, especially his namesake, granddaughter Merrick Elizabeth, who he was so proud of.  Charles was a regular for lunch at the Upper Township Senior Center and enjoyed the social time there.  He attended South Seaville Methodist Church until a fall in the summer of 2018 forced him to slow down and made getting around more difficult. Sadly, on December 7th Charles’ life on earth came to a tragic end, but he will now celebrate Christmas with his wife and our Lord.

Relatives and friends are invited to his viewing on Sunday, December 15, 2019, from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM and again on Monday, December 16, 2019, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at the BARCLAY FUNERAL HOME, 208 Maple Street, Clayton, NJ  08312.  Funeral service on Monday at 11:00 AM at the funeral home.  Interment Manahath Cemetery, Glassboro.  For those who so desire, contributions may be made in his memory to Samaritan’s Purse, PO Box 3000, Boone, NC 28607 or via SamaritansPurse.org.  The family respectfully requests those wishing to send flowers to send poinsettias.  Sign the guest book and send condolences at BarclayFuneralHome.net.
