CHARLES HENRY SHOVER, JR. – Obituary

Charles Henry Shover, Jr. of Franklinville died on Tuesday, July 13, 2021.  Age 71.  Father of Sarah Shover of Pitman.  Brother of Lawrence “Buddy” T. Shover of Franklinville and Maryann Y. Sarkady of Vineland.  Uncle to Benjamin T. Shover of Franklinville.  Son of the late Charles Henry & Jennie Shover.

Born and raised briefly in Philadelphia, Charles has been a resident of Franklinville for the past 63 years.  He was a 1969 graduate of Delsea Regional High School and proudly served for two years in the US Navy during the Vietnam War on the USS Dyess as a Fireman.  After his honorable discharge from the Navy, Charles worked at Philadelphia General Hospital for seven years doing maintenance.  He then worked for the USPS for 24 years, beginning with 12 years in Swedesboro as a Material Handler and later a member of their Hazmat team.  He continued in Bellmawr for 10 years followed by 2 years in Ardmore, PA before his retirement.  

Charles loved hunting (especially deer, rabbit, and muzzle-loader) as well as freshwater and saltwater fishing.  Along with his brother, he enjoyed participating in Civil War Re-enactments.  During high school, Charles earned numerous trophies as a weightlifter.  He was a rabid Eagles Fan and also enjoyed baseball, especially the Phillies.  Charles loved playing chess and enjoyed Texas Hold-em Poker at the casinos and playing pinochle with family and friends.  His brother recalls that he was a ferocious competitor in anything that he did.

Relatives and friends are invited to his viewing on Tuesday, July 20, 2021, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at the BARCLAY FUNERAL HOME, 208 Maple Street, Clayton, NJ with a Celebration of Life beginning at 11:00 AM.  Interment at the Gloucester County Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Williamstown.  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to Operation Second Chance, 20251 Century Boulevard, Suite 130, Germantown, MD 20874 or via OperationSecondChance.org/donate.  Sign the guestbook at BarclayFuneralHome.net.
