BERTHA LOUISE BURGESS – Obituary

Bertha Louise (née Bendel) Burgess, age 77, of Elk Township, New Jersey, on Thursday, October 15, 2026. Beloved wife of Albert Rodman Burgess, Jr., with whom she shared 54 years of marriage following their wedding on April 1, 1972, in Moorestown, New Jersey. Loving sister of Frank J. Bendel (Donna), and sister-in-law of Bruce H. Burgess (Yvonne) and Monica A. Zuba (Butch Porch). Daughter of the late Frank Sterling and Bertha Theresa (née Brown) Bendel, Louise also leaves behind many cherished cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Born on April 17, 1949, in Mount Holly, New Jersey, Louise was raised in Moorestown and was a proud graduate of Moorestown High School, Class of 1967. During her high school years, she enjoyed an active school life, participating in a variety of clubs and extracurricular activities that reflected her interests in music, education, and school spirit. She was a member of the Girls Glee Club and Mixed Chorus, taking part in her school’s musical activities, and explored her interest in teaching through Future Teachers of America. Louise also participated in the Flying Club, Pep Club, and Concert Goers, broadening her experiences beyond the classroom. Her involvement in the Play Committee further connected her with her school’s creative and theatrical activities. Louise continued her education at Glassboro State College, now Rowan University, where she graduated in 1971 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education, concentrating in Kindergarten and Primary School Education.

While attending college, Louise worked at the Quaker Nursing Home in Moorestown. Following graduation, she began her teaching career as a first-grade teacher in the Burlington School System, where she worked from 1971 to 1974. She then joined Janvier Elementary School in the Township of Franklin School District, teaching second grade from 1974 until her retirement in 2005. Over the course of more than 30 years at Janvier Elementary, Louise influenced generations of students through her commitment to education and her care for their growth and development. In recognition of her outstanding work, she was named Teacher of the Year in 2005, a fitting tribute to her long and meaningful career in education.

Louise made her home in Elk Township for 50 years, building a life enriched by her faith, family, and community. Having grown up attending Moorestown United Methodist Church, she later transferred her membership to Franklinville United Methodist Church, where she became actively involved in the congregation. She served as Administrative Council Secretary and participated on the Parsonage and Nominating Committees. Louise also taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School, served as an adjunct Sunday School teacher, sang in the church choir, and assisted with other church responsibilities whenever needed. Her many contributions reflected the importance of faith and fellowship in her life and her desire to remain involved in the church community.

Louise found joy in spending time outdoors and embracing the many adventures life had to offer. She enjoyed gardening and took pleasure in boating and water skiing. Her adventurous side also led her to motorcycling and whitewater rafting, activities that reflected her willingness to try new things and enjoy life to the fullest. Louise also loved to travel exploring destinations throughout the United States, as well as the United Kingdom, Zimbabwe, and South Africa. Whether enjoying time outdoors, seeking adventure, or discovering new destinations, Louise made the most of the opportunities to experience the world around her.

Louise will be remembered for her passion for education, her steadfast faith, and her adventurous nature. She leaves behind cherished memories and a legacy of learning, faith, and a life well lived. She will be deeply missed by her beloved husband, family, friends, former students, and all who had the privilege of knowing her.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, November 14, 2026, at 11:00 AM at the Franklinville United Methodist Church, 1525 Coles Mill Road, Franklinville, NJ  08322.  Relatives and friends are invited to visit with the family from 10:00 AM until service time.  A reception will follow in the Social Hall, given by the Women’s Group in honor of Louise’s dedication to the church.
