ANTHONY CARTELLA, JR. – Obituary

Anthony Cartella, Jr., 79, of Mullica Hill, passed through heaven’s gates on April 22, 2026. Surrounded by his family, his spirit went home to be with the Lord after battling cancer and the side effects of its treatment.

Anthony was born on September 1, 1946, in Camden, NJ, to Anthony and Mary Antionette (nee Caccese) Cartella, Sr.  He was raised in Mullica Hill and originally attended Woodstown High School but graduated in 1964 as part of the first graduating class of Kingsway Regional High School.  Anthony went on to attend Glassboro State College, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts and later a Master of Arts.  He began what would be a 38-year-long career as an Earth Science teacher at Delsea Regional High School; however, in 1969, he left to join the United States Coast Guard, where he served as a marine science technician. Four years later, Anthony returned to Delsea, where he met his “Sunshine”, Janice McKnett. She married her “Italian Stallion” on May 20, 1977. Together, they shared each other’s passion for teaching. Janice supported Tony for 20 successful seasons of coaching both Track and Cross Country.  Once retired, Ocean City held many blissful summers and fond memories.

Anthony grew up attending Kingsway Assembly of God Church alongside friends and family. Cousins were the brothers he never had.  Summers spent at Malaga Camp were treasured. Since then, he has been blessed to call Calvary Hill Church his home and has faithfully served in various positions for over 45 years. He was a man of faith and unwavering character. His “yes” was “yes”, and his “no” was “no”.  A Christ-centered life was always his desire. He led by example and exemplified biblical virtues. He was a God-fearing man with a tender heart. He loved his family fiercely, delighted in a good meal, and enjoyed fishing. On his boat, he took pleasure in fellowship and the opportunity to share wisdom or guidance to help navigate life’s stormy seas. His deepest longing was that his discipleship would live on through his children’s children.

Anthony is survived by his beloved wife of 49 years, Janice Cartella (nee McKnett); their children, Holly Griscom (nee Cartella) and her husband Jason, Mark Cartella and his wife Jennifer, and Christopher Cartella and his wife Sara; 10 grandchildren: Gia Griscom, Talia Griscom, Nicholas Griscom, Mark Cartella, Christian Cartella, Mia Cartella, Camille Cartella, Anthony Cartella, Alexis Cartella, and Michael Cartella; his sister, Gerry Spuler (nee Cartella); his nieces and nephews; and extended family.

“I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in Me will live, even though they die.” John 11:25

Relatives and friends are invited to his viewing on Sunday, May 3, 2026, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM and again on Monday, May 4, 2026, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Calvary Hill Church, 535 Mullica Hill Road, Glassboro, NJ 08028.  Funeral Service on Monday at 11:00 AM at the church.  Military Honors and interment to follow at Eglington Cemetery in Clarksboro.
