Delsea Wrestling Back in Action at Robin Leff Tournament

Fans rejoice, wrestling is back again! After a long off season Delsea wrestling competed in the Robin Leff Tournament at Southern Regional High School. Many Delsea wrestlers performed well in the tournament, giving great hope for another State Championship. Here are the results from the 2016 Robin Leff Tournament.

At 106 LBS Delsea’s Justin Doughtery wrestled against Moorestown’s Jon Miles in the first round. He picked up the victory with a 3:10 fall. Dougherty would lose his next matchup via a 16-2 decision to Jackson Memorial’s Vinny Scollo. Doughtery won his first wrestleback match, but would lose his next matchup to Buena’s Bobby Leak in a 15-2 decision. In the 106 LBS first place match, Clearview’s Carmen Giumarello defeated Queen of Peace’s Will Grater in a 3-0 decision.

At 113 LBS Delsea’s Chris Recinto made it to the 2nd round before losing to Queen of Peace’s Matt Armamento. Recinto would win 2 wrestleback matches before losing to Southern’s Owen Kretschmer 2-1 in the 5th place matchup. In the 113 LBS first place match Queen of Peace’s Enrique Sanchez pinned Egg Harbor Township’s Terrel Coleman in 4:56.

At 120 LBS Delsea’s John Patterson had a bye the first round. In the second round Patterson defeated Jackson Memorial’s Jeremiah Nash 5-1. Patterson lost to Brandon Connor 7-3 in the semi-final match. Patterson would defeat Moorestown’s JT Lumley with a :25 fall. In the 120 LBS first place match St. John Vianney’s Luke Ecklof defeated Connor 3-0.

At 126 LBS there were no Delsea wrestlers. Egg Harbor Township’s Hunter Thomas defeated Clearview’s David McCullough in the first place match. At 132 LBS Delsea had two wrestlers. Edison Echevarria, one of delsea’s top wrestlers, made it to the semifinals, but lost to Southern’s Matt Barnett 3-1. Delsea’s other wrestler at 132 Tim Spatola also made it to the semifinals, losing to Ray Wetzel, who would defeat Barnett in the finals 3-2. The 3rd place matchup ended in a double forfeit.

At 138 LBS Delsea’s Nick Bennett made it to the semifinal match before losing to Jackson Memorial’s Matt McGowan 12-3. Bennett would defeat Tyler Wilkes in the 3rd place matchup with a 1:24 fall. McGowan would defeat Hasbrouck Heights’ Jason Dalcortivo in a 2-1 decision.

At 145 LBS Delsea did not have a wrestler competing. Hasbrouck Heights’ Matthew Dallara defeated Southern’s Nick O’Connell 6-4 in the finals. At 152 Delsea had two wrestlers. Vito Genna did not win a match while Seth Summers won his first matchup, before losing to Buena’s Tim Suter via a 5:30 Tech Fall. Summers would lose in the 5th place match to Southern’s Dan Gorman.

At 160 LBS Delsea’s Mason Maxwell made it to the semifinal match, losing to Bailey Funk. Maxwell would win his 3rd place matchup over Queen of Peace’s Mike Pillot. In the finals another Maxwell, Jake Maxwell of Buena, wrestled. Maxwell defeated Funk 3-1. At 170 LBS Delsea’s Billy Janzer entered as the top guy, and let everyone know that throughout the tournament. He pinned his first opponent in :30. He then pinned his next opponent in 2:14. He dominated St. John Vianney’s Nick Caracappa 16-6. In the finals Janzer defeated Tommy O’Brien 12-4.

At 182 LBS Delsea’s Vince DeGeorge entered as the top guy. DeGeorge made it to the final before losing to Southern’s Seon Bowker 3-1. At 195 LBS Delsea’s Tommy Maxwell entered as the top guy. He made it to the finals where he pinned Egg Harbor’s Nick Leone in 2:59.

At 220 LBS Delsea’s Justin Moore impressed. Moore had a bye in the first round, then pinned Dave Lenay in :48. Moore lost in the semifinal to Egg Harbor’s Connor Agostino 5-3. Moore defeated Southern’s Dave Lynch with a 3:30 fall in the 3rd place matchup. Delsea’s Malcolm Henry also had a bye but lost his matchup to St. John Vianney’s Steven Giannios 5-0. Henry made it to the 5th place matchup after 2 pins but could not defeat Lenay, losing 4-3.

Finally, in the Heavyweight class, Delsea’s Gavin Darby won his first match but lost to St. John Vianney’s Micah Clark. Darby lost in wrestlebacks to Queen of Peace’s Jason Kopich. Congratulations to Billy Janzer and Tommy Maxwell for winning 1st in the Robin Leff Tournament. Also Congratulations to Vince DeGeorge, John Patterson, Tim Spatola, Edison Echevarria, Nick Bennett, Mason Maxwell, and Justin Moore for finishing in the top 3 as well.
