Ruth M. Nichols of Clayton on Friday, April 25, 2025. Age 95. Wife of 23 years to Edward A. Nichols, Sr. Mother of Ruth Novakowski; the late Joseph A. Freeman, Sr.; and the late Raymond Potts. Step-mother of Edward A. Nichols, Jr. (Louann); Ruthann Young (Roger); and Wayne Nichols (Kate). Grandmother of Tina Kolsun; Lisa Kolsun; Joseph A. Freeman, Jr.; and many other grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Born on April 9, 1930, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Ruth was raised in the city before eventually settling in Gloucester, NJ. For the past 60 years, she made her home in Clayton, NJ, where she created a life marked by family, friendship, and a deep appreciation for the outdoors.
Ruth dedicated over thirty years of her life to Columbia Records, working in the shipping department until her retirement in the early 1990s. She was a longtime and active member of the Rebekah Lodge in Mantua, the women’s branch of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, where she proudly served as president for one term.
Ruth’s life was filled with the joys of nature, family, and simple pleasures. She loved crabbing and fishing with her husband, Edward, and always looked forward to enjoying the day’s catch with a couple of beers. An avid gardener, she took great pride in landscaping her property with flowers and plants, and often spent her days outside, savoring the fresh air and sunshine.
A true lover of the outdoors, Ruth spent many happy years camping at King Nummy Trail Campground in Cape May Courthouse. There, she formed lasting friendships and made countless memories.
Ruth also had a fondness for animals, sharing her home with several beloved small dogs over the years, and her cherished cat, Cuddles — the third cat she named with that title, each one deeply loved.
Relatives and friends are invited to her visitation on Friday, May 2, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at the BARCLAY FUNERAL HOME, 208 Maple Street, Clayton, NJ 08312.
