Raymond Charles Griggs “Ray,” age 71, of Franklinville, NJ. On December 2, 2025, surrounded by family. Ray succumbed to chronic C.O.P.D.
Ray was a fun and loving husband to his wife of 46 years, June Vera (nee Goodwin) Griggs. He was a devoted father to Lori A. Burke (Joseph), Renee M. Frame (John), and Colleen S. Griggs. Ray was a very proud Pop Pop to Christian, Brianna, Bailey, Vera, Johnny, Logan, Taylor, and Dominick.
Ray was born and raised in South Philadelphia by his parents, Anna (Abigaile) Schenzle and George Francis Deland Griggs. He is predeceased by his siblings Florence “Maryiln” Camero (Chris), George Griggs, Jr. (Gladys), and Jeannette Brody (John).
Ray started his early employment years at Pier 30 Tennis on Delaware Avenue in Philadelphia, where he not only worked but also learned how to play tennis and met many celebrities in the sports and entertainment business. Ray continued to work as a laborer in multiple factories, including the Acme Bakery, Durkee Foods, and Corning Glass (formerly Kimbells).
He was a fun and loving guy who enjoyed having friends and family over. He had the best sense of humor and enjoyed telling jokes and watching old movies and comedians. Ray loved to do impersonations and would often make us laugh when we least expected it. He liked to ride his bike and play basketball with the kids. He enjoyed vacations, day trips, and music. He always got on the dance floor with his bride by his side. He enjoyed being a mummer and went up with the comics, but really enjoyed the years he helped Avalon String Band make it to City Hall and at the Show of Shows beside his beloved father-in-law, “Marvelous Marv”.
Never a day went by that Ray didn’t read the newspaper, eat chocolate candy, or drink soda and eat Wise potato chips. Not only will he be missed by family and friends, but we think The Inquirer, Hershey, Pepsi Co., and Wise Chips will miss him too.
Relatives and friends are invited to his viewing on Saturday, December 13, 2025, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM at the BARCLAY FUNERAL HOME, 208 Maple Street, Clayton, NJ 08312. Funeral service will begin at 4:00 PM. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family. Sign the guestbook and send condolences at BarclayFuneralHome.net.
