George William Sheared entered the world on February 20, 1940, the second of six children born to John Sheared and Bessie Kirby Sheared. Born in Philadelphia, PA, George’s family moved to Franklinville, New Jersey when he was a child. He attended elementary school in Franklinville and later enrolled at Clayton High School. In high school, George studied industrial arts with an emphasis in drafting. He stood out for his athletic skills in football and basketball. After graduating in 1959, George joined the United States Navy where he served as a draftsman third class. After an honorable military discharge George worked as a linesman for Atlantic City Electric Company. He retired as a regional supervisor in 1995. He married Sandra Variance in 1975. A handsome couple, they resided in Vineland where George enjoyed working on house projects and maintained his lawn and that of his nearest neighbor.
In his spare time George enjoyed playing cards, listening to jazz and woodworking. He often picked up discarded wooden furniture and created lamps, tables, religious artifacts and other items he deemed useful. He had a life-long love affair with sports and was glued to the television during major sporting events. George loved family get-togethers and was always the designated pit master. He was a private, respectful man who did not hesitate to help those in need.
George resided at the Vineland Veterans Memorial Home for five years and was well known by the staff. He succumbed to illness suddenly on Saturday, March 14 2026. He touched our lives in countless ways and was a blessing to many. His presence in our lives was a gift for which we are thankful.
